If we plan to gain strength, tone, and muscle mass to achieve a fit body, the first thing we usually do is join the gym to do our training there, however, is it essential to go to the gym?

The trend: Train outside the gym

Beyond the need or not to go to the gym if we want to be in shape, the current trend is to train outside the gym like Seattle fitness class.

Whether for economic, time, comfort or other reasons, many today choose to work out their body at home, in a park, on the beach or in any other space other than a fitness center or gym, using home-made, urban equipment, from the street or a minimum investment to exercise the body with certain objects.

Today, moreover, this tendency to train outside the gym is favored by the existence of videos, applications and other tools that we all have access to and that can guide or direct us to train without a professional or machines at our side.

Likewise, a large number of disciplines propose the practice of exercises without any equipment that we can imitate to form a routine that allows us to stay in shape by working outside the gym.

Alternatives to do without the gym

As we have said, one of the reasons why many today choose to do without the gym is the existence of a large number of alternatives to train and stay in shape.

Among them we find training in the street or street workout that, using urban furniture, allows us to develop a variety of exercises to work the body, as well as calisthenics that helps us to train intensely to get a fit body.

This last alternative, calisthenics, is undoubtedly the discipline most used by those seeking to gain strength, agility and balance as well as a toned and harmonious body away from the gym. With this discipline we will only need a little previous strength, good technique and simply go outside to work our body.

In fact, many exercises that we perform in the gym can be reproduced in an alternative way with calisthenic movements:

  • Clearly in the gym we can add extra weight or choose the load we want to mobilize while practicing calisthenics we will only work with our body weight, with complex exercises whose technique is essential.
  • Another alternative is to train at home doing a variety of exercises without equipment or with certain objects and with a minimum investment, working the body in the comfort of our home.

Is it essential to go to the gym?

Although with all the available alternatives and the great technological help of today we can get in shape without going to the gym, much will depend on our objective and/or need.

Given the complexity of callisthenic exercises and the strength and agility requirements for their performance, very few people will be able to enter their practice without first going through the gym or another discipline that conditions the body.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to hypertrophy rather than gain strength and agility, calisthenics and any bodyweight training may have limited benefits, since at some point you’ll need heavier weight and extra load to progress.

Also, if we are coming out of an injury and need to adapt training to our rehabilitation period, the help and advice of a professional that we can find in a gym or fitness center is essential, therefore, in these cases, exercise alone at home or in the street is not the most advisable.

Thus, although the gym is not essential, it can be useful to stay in shape and achieve certain specific goals. Perhaps the best thing is not to stay with a single alternative but to take advantage of the combination of both to achieve a fit body.
